
Leaders of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have welcomed Trinidad and Tobago’s successful election to a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term.
The election, which took place on 3 June 2026, received broad support from UN member nations and was seen as a strong endorsement of Trinidad and Tobago’s longstanding engagement in international diplomacy, support for multilateral cooperation, and commitment to the principles set out in the United Nations Charter.
In a congratulatory message, CARICOM Heads of Government described the achievement as an important moment not only for Trinidad and Tobago but for the wider Caribbean region. They noted that the appointment highlights the growing influence and contribution of Caribbean nations on the global stage.
The regional bloc expressed confidence that Trinidad and Tobago will effectively represent the interests and concerns of Caribbean Small Island Developing States and low-lying coastal nations, particularly on matters linked to international peace, security, resilience, and sustainable development.
CARICOM also pledged its continued support as Trinidad and Tobago prepares to undertake its responsibilities on the Security Council, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation in advancing shared priorities within the United Nations system.
As a member of the Security Council, Trinidad and Tobago will play a direct role in discussions and decisions concerning international peace and security during its two-year term, placing the Caribbean nation among the world’s key voices on global affairs.
