
In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, a quiet rebuilding effort is unfolding across parts of western Jamaica, not through large-scale programmes alone, but through hands-on repair work led by volunteers from the National Housing Trust (NHT), restoring damaged homes for some of the country’s most vulnerable residents.
The initiative, which began informally among staff, has since expanded into a structured response focused on repairing roofs, replacing windows and doors, and restoring basic living conditions for elderly residents and low-income families. While modest in scale, the effort highlights a deeper issue within Jamaica’s housing landscape, the fragility of older housing stock and the uneven ability of households to recover after climate shocks.
